Land contamination (Williamtown)

This is a class action (the Class Action) against the Department of Defence (Defence) in connection with land contamination arising from Defence’s use of aqueous film forming foam at the Williamtown RAAF Base in NSW (the Contamination). It is alleged that Defence allowed the Contamination to escape from its land causing damage to property owners and businesses for which Defence should be liable to pay compensation.

Current Stage of Case

On 5 June 2020, the Federal Court of Australia approved the $86 million settlement of the Williamtown Class Action, appointing Dentons as the administrator of the Settlement Distribution Scheme (SDS) and approving the terms of the SDS.
